Covid timing of Sx – 2021
This document is a summary of a study conducted by the COVIDSurg Collaborative and GlobalSurg Collaborative on the timing of surgery following SARS-CoV-2 infection. The study aimed to determine the optimal duration of delay before surgery in patients who have had a previous SARS-CoV-2 infection. The study found that patients who underwent surgery within 0-6 weeks of SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis had an increased risk of postoperative mortality and pulmonary complications. However, surgery performed at least 7 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis was associated with a similar mortality risk to patients without SARS-CoV-2 infection. The study suggests that surgery should be delayed for at least 7 weeks following SARS-CoV-2 infection to reduce the risk of complications.
